ADHD is evaluated, not pre-diagnosed. We believe an accurate diagnosis is the treatment plan's foundation — and that you deserve to know exactly how we work before you book. This page explains how Lyte Psychiatry approaches ADHD evaluations and all controlled medications, including stimulants.
What your first visit looks like
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation with a board-certified psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. For ADHD concerns, that evaluation reviews:
- Your current symptoms and how they affect work, school, and relationships
- Developmental and school history, going back to childhood
- Family history of ADHD and other conditions
- Conditions that can look like ADHD — anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, thyroid issues, and substance-related concerns
- Validated screening tools (such as the ASRS) that support — but never replace — clinical judgment
Treatment recommendations come after this evaluation, not before. Sometimes the answer is ADHD. Sometimes it's something else that responds to a different treatment entirely — and finding that out early is a good outcome, not a delay.
Controlled substances are never guaranteed
Stimulants (like Adderall or Vyvanse), benzodiazepines, and other controlled medications are prescribed only when clinically appropriate after a full evaluation. Booking an appointment is never a promise of any specific prescription. Our providers follow current clinical guidelines, Texas and New Mexico prescribing regulations, and DEA requirements — including checking prescription monitoring programs before prescribing.
Transferring an existing prescription
If you already take a controlled medication, we're glad to review your treatment — but prescriptions from outside providers are not continued sight-unseen. New patients complete a full evaluation before any continuation, adjustment, or taper decision. Bringing prior records, pharmacy history, or testing results to your first visit helps us make that decision faster.
Telehealth and in-person visits
Many medications can be prescribed and managed entirely by video. Some controlled medications, however, may require an in-person evaluation under federal or state rules. This is where a real clinic makes the difference: when a rule calls for an in-person visit — or you simply prefer one — our Dallas–Fort Worth clinic is right here. Same provider, same treatment plan, whichever way you're seen.
Refills and ongoing monitoring
- Controlled medications require regular follow-up visits; we track your response with symptom scores at each visit.
- Request refills through the patient portal or your pharmacy at least 3 business days before you run out.
- Lost or early-refill requests receive additional review and may require a visit.
- We check in after every medication change — that's part of the plan, not an extra.
When Lyte is not the right fit
If you are looking for a same-day stimulant prescription without an evaluation, or expect a controlled medication to be continued without clinical review, we are not the right practice for you — and we would rather say so up front than have you arrive with the wrong expectations. If you need a higher level of care, such as detox or inpatient treatment, call 911, go to the nearest emergency room, or call or text 988 for a mental health crisis.
