What age can a child see a psychiatrist?
Lyte Psychiatry evaluates children starting at age 6. Before age 6, most psychiatric symptoms are best addressed through pediatric behavioral therapy. From age 6 onward, a child psychiatrist can assess whether ADHD, anxiety, depression, or another condition is present and recommend treatment.
Does my child need a psychiatrist or a therapist?
A psychiatrist diagnoses conditions and can prescribe medication when appropriate. A therapist provides talk therapy and behavioral strategies. Many children benefit from both. If you are unsure where to start, a psychiatric evaluation can clarify the diagnosis and whether therapy alone is sufficient or medication should be considered.
How is ADHD diagnosed in children?
ADHD is diagnosed through a comprehensive evaluation that includes parent and teacher rating scales, a clinical interview, developmental history, and ruling out other conditions like anxiety or sleep disorders. There is no single test for ADHD. A thorough evaluation typically takes one to two visits.
Will my child be put on medication?
Not necessarily. Medication is one option, not a default. After evaluation, the psychiatrist discusses all options with you, including behavioral strategies, therapy, and medication. If medication is recommended, you decide together whether to proceed. Parents are part of every treatment decision.
What happens at the first appointment?
The first visit is a comprehensive evaluation lasting 45 to 60 minutes. The psychiatrist reviews your child’s developmental history, current symptoms, school performance, and family context. Parents join every visit. At the end, you receive a clear diagnosis (or next steps) and a treatment plan.
