Use the first counseling meeting to agree on a plan
WTAMU’s appointment page describes an initial triage consultation lasting about 20–30 minutes. Its purpose is to understand the reason for seeking help and agree on a plan; the clinician at that meeting may differ from the person providing follow-up counseling.
Request the appointment through Student Counseling Services and allow time for its forms. Bring the question you need resolved, such as beginning therapy or finding ongoing care beyond the semester. Before leaving, check whether the next visit is already booked and who to contact if it is not.

Verify the Health Fee and your remaining counseling benefit
The counseling FAQ connects eligibility to current enrollment and payment of the Health Fee. It describes up to eight sessions per fiscal year at no additional cost and consideration of a community referral when more support is needed.
Ask the office how the current rule applies to you, especially after changing enrollment or returning for summer. If you have used counseling previously, ask how many eligible visits remain and when the benefit period resets. Discuss an outside transition early enough to check costs and intake requirements without assuming the same fee arrangement follows you.

Ask Student Medical Services about the specific medication care request
Student Medical Services lists mental health screening, brief intervention and referral among its services, alongside specific exclusions and limits. A medical appointment is a separate request from the counseling consultation.
Describe whether you need an initial evaluation, review of existing treatment or help identifying a specialist. Ask the office which records it needs to determine fit. If you have a current prescriber, establish who remains responsible for treatment questions during the transition. The clinic’s general prescribing description does not guarantee that it will take over a particular medication or treatment plan.

Use the university’s TELUS route for its listed support options
The counseling homepage links to TELUS and instructs students to select West Texas A&M University when setting up the service. It describes around-the-clock mental health support through the program.
Check the current options in the platform and ask how a conversation connects to scheduled follow-up if you want continuing support. Do not assume that a TELUS contact also reserves a campus appointment. If travel is involved, confirm the service available at your physical location before relying on it as part of your plan.

Check the right office’s cancellation and semester rules
WTAMU publishes separate cancellation instructions for counseling and medical appointments. The medical page also distinguishes clinical services from administrative front-desk access during semester breaks.
Put the office name, cancellation deadline and contact route into your appointment reminder. If you need to change a visit, notify that office directly and confirm a replacement time. Before finals, ask what services continue after your eligibility period ends; an open front desk does not establish that a clinician is available for an appointment.

Considering therapy or medication management at Lyte
Lyte provides therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Ask which service and clinician fit your needs. A medication evaluation does not guarantee a prescription or continuation of a particular medication.
Lyte Psychiatry offers telehealth visits to patients who are physically located in Texas at the time of the visit. In-person appointments take place at Lyte’s Pantego clinic; this campus guide does not describe a Lyte office at the institution.
Coverage and costs depend on your specific plan, clinician, visit type and deductible. Confirm network status and expected costs before booking. A student plan, parent’s plan or campus referral does not by itself establish Lyte coverage.
Request a Lyte appointmentConfirm appointment format, availability and costs before booking. For questions, call 469-733-0848. Clinic hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Central Time. Weekend appointments are limited and offered case by case.
Send medical records and insurance details only through the practice’s approved secure intake process.
Questions before you arrange care
Is my first WTAMU counseling consultation necessarily with my ongoing therapist?
No. WTAMU says the clinician providing the initial consultation may differ from the follow-up therapist. Ask which next step has been arranged before leaving the first meeting.
