Is buspirone a benzodiazepine?
Reviewed by Dr. Akinwande Akintola, MD - Sun Jul 19 2026
No. Buspirone works on serotonin receptors, not the GABA system benzos use. So no dependence, no withdrawal, no controlled-substance rules. The trade-off: it doesn't work "as needed." You take it daily and it builds over two to four weeks.
People like it because it doesn't fog you up the way benzos can, which matters if your job needs your brain sharp. It's often added when an SSRI got you most of the way on anxiety but not all the way there.
