Why do I wake up at 3am with my mind racing?
Cortisol rises naturally in the early-morning hours. A calm brain sleeps through the nudge; an anxious or depressed brain treats it as an alarm, which is why 3am waking with rumination is a classic signature of both. Alcohol makes it worse by fragmenting the second half of the night, and reaching for your phone tells your brain the day has officially started.
