Can I drink alcohol while taking Lexapro?
Reviewed by Dr. Akinwande Akintola, MD - Sun Jul 19 2026
Better not to, at least for the first few weeks. Alcohol and Lexapro work on overlapping brain chemistry, so drinking on it tends to hit harder, make you drowsier, and undo some of what the medication is doing. One drink at a wedding once you're stable? That's a conversation with your prescriber, not an automatic no.
The thing worth saying out loud: a lot of people drink because of the anxiety they're now treating. If cutting back feels impossible, tell your prescriber. Treating the anxiety underneath usually makes the drinking easier to loosen. MedlinePlus has the full interaction list if you want the fine print.
